International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia & Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) takes place annually on May 17th and offers workers and employers the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to inclusion and equality - and help build a better world for the LGBTIQ community.
There are many exciting ways to get involved in the cause and celebrate inclusivity.
Working together to combat prejudice
Homophobia, biphobia, interphobia and transphobia can occur in many ways. Whether it is online or face-to-face, abuse can affect everyone by creating spaces where people feel unsafe and unable to be themselves.
IDAHOBIT reminds people that sexuality and gender identity or intersex status aren't always visible – so creating a workplace culture where everyone feels safe, even if there aren't any visible LGBTI people present – is even more important.
With many people spending the majority of their time at work, creating a welcoming working environment is essential in order to help maintain their wellbeing.
How to celebrate IDAHOBIT at work
Below, we list a handful of ways that you can show your support this IDAHOBIT and take part in the event across future years to come.
- go rainbow: wearing rainbow colors for the day is a simple way of rallying colleagues to show you’re taking a stand against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia
- run an event: events such as BBQs, afternoon teas, quiz nights or after work drinks are likely to get many people involved
- start a project: use IDAHOBIT as an opportunity to launch a project that supports sexual and gender diversity, such as the formation of an LGBTIQ committee
- CEO support: company CEOs can write blogs or articles in support of LGBTIQ staff and clients
- shout it proud: share photos on social media throughout the day using the hashtag #IDAHOBIT
- give generously: use IDAHOBIT to add LGBTIQ charities to the workplace giving programs, or organise a unique fundraiser to support LGBTIQ youth
