Elisabeth Staudinger, Managing Board Member & Head of Asia Pacific at Siemens Healthineers, has an ambitious vision of improved healthcare facilities for this region, where she has lived and worked for many years. She speaks of how her role at Siemens Healthineers has helped her reach her full potential by contributing to improved healthcare access. Here are some insightful snippets from Elisabeth's original article:

Asia-Pacific countries leapfrogging into digitalization

Having lived in the region for several years, Elisabeth has first-hand knowledge of local trends. She has observed a rapid and far-reaching transformation of healthcare in many neighboring countries. She believes the main influential factors are demographics, technological innovation, changing expectations of patients, and a frequently missing healthcare infrastructure. In response to such factors, consumer-focused and often highly digitalized healthcare ecosystems are forming very quickly. Elisabeth explains that skipping development stages is often referred to as “leapfrogging”: Providers, consumers, and governments are building new healthcare systems from the ground up on the basis of electronic files and other digital conventions, which other countries, including some in Europe, are struggling with.

“While industrialized nations often focus on digitalizing their analog processes, many countries in the Asia-Pacific region are seizing the tremendous opportunity to skip over the analog phase. These ‘digital health natives’ are going straight to digitalization, which gives them a strong head start,” Elisabeth elucidates.

Start-ups driving innovation

Elisabeth explains how in the Asia-Pacific region, this revolution isn’t usually driven by governments; but instead by innovative start-ups, including in the area of telemedicine. This trend is also responsive to the expectations of patients, who are increasingly acting like consumers. For example, there are app-based services provided by several start-ups which are making an immense contribution to improved, customized, and above all 24/7 healthcare. Elisabeth reiterates how the Siemens Healthineers team is also a driving force that’s creating solutions and strategic partnerships to support digital business models. She believes work fosters multi-disciplinary collaboration, training, and tools for patient communication, ultimately transforming how healthcare is provided and accessed by people in the region.
