Studying an integrated masters in mechanical engineering with biomedical engineering, Megan's degree made her particularly fascinated by the crossover of engineering and health care. This, she feels, is the epitome of Siemens Healthineers. "I want to be a part of the positive difference that Siemens Healthineers is making, and I am so very honoured to be able to say that I can do that," says Megan.
Using applications of physics, combined with engineering for medical applications, has made a huge difference in the medical field. Siemens Healthineers plays a large role in this arena, transforming lives.
A challenging and enjoyable role
Describing her role, Megan says: "As a process engineer, I think the easiest way to explain my job is that we work to support production by solving internal and external process, and work on increasing process efficiency in every aspect such as time, cost, and resource to refine the process but also maintain quality standards."
Megan believes the impact of her your work is to maintain production and insure the quantity of magnets produced is met, as well as shipments made without any compromising on quality.
Megan finds her work challenging and there are some parts of it that particularly stretch her. "My job is quite challenging because everything has to be completed very thoroughly or there could be drastic effects like missing shipments, or a magnet getting cut which is expensive, or health and safety risks."
In terms of Megan's journey into the role, it was in her second year of university studying mechanical engineering that she sought to have a year in industry to experience the world of work and better understand what an engineer really did. "I was applying for placements which encompassed both biomedical and mechanical engineering. Siemens Healthineers fitted my prerequisites, so I applied and was very fortunate to have received an offer. I've now worked for Siemens Healthineers for around a year,"
A friendly and welcoming environment
Describing the company's work culture, inclusivity and overall support for women, Megan says that Siemens Healthineers has a very friendly and welcoming environment with lots of training opportunities, especially in the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) arena. "In terms of support for women, there's a thriving female focus group which women are welcome to partake in," says Megan.
Describing some of the skills and qualities that tend to be most valued at Siemens Healthineers, Megan says: "It's very important to possess great communication and people skills because the work environment relies very much on employees being positive, sociable and well-disposed, so these are important qualities for collaborating."
Offering advice for further women considering applying for a role with Siemens Healthineers, Megan suggests not to shy away from working what many perceive as a male-dominated work environment. "You will adapt and learn to work well with everyone, so if you're considering a role at Siemens Healthineers, go for it!"
"Take every opportunity you get," advises Megan.
Spending her downtime being active
When she is not working, Megan prefers to spend her downtime outdoors. She especially enjoys running. "I would spend all my time outside and running if I could," says Megan. "It’s my very favourite hobby to just escape."
