As part of its focus on women's health in the workplace, Theramex interviewed a Chief Medical Scientific Officer in the industry about taboos in women’s health and why it is urgently necessary to break them.

This thought-provoking interview with Fondazione Onda's Chief Medical Scientific Officer, Nicoletta Orthmann, addresses taboos surrounding women’s health and why it is urgently necessary to break them.

Delving into this issue, Nicoletta shares insight into the specific role organizations can play in tackling taboos, stating: “Initiatives promoted in the workplace, and aimed at promoting correct information on these topics, are very important”.

By advocating in communities and workplaces, Nicoletta believes that all women can be informed about and supported to receive treatments that can significantly improve their lives.

Sharing a strong taboo for women today

For Nicoletta, one of the major health topics that remains a strong taboo for women today is menopause.

"Many women still fear menopause. They describe it with a narrative that is not positive. There is also reluctance regarding the therapeutic possibilities available today, as if women were forced to accept the whole "menopause package" without considering treatment opportunities that exist and that would significantly improve the quality of their lives," explains Nicoletta.

Breaking women's health taboos

When asked why it's important to break women's health taboos, Nicoletta says: "I would change the word: it's not important but urgently necessary because breaking taboos and tearing down these walls enables women to make informed choices about their health and access specific diagnostic and treatment pathways promptly."

Promoting information and awareness

How can organizations help in breaking these health taboos?

"Regarding the tools to promote this information and awareness, I believe that initiatives promoted in the workplace and aimed at promoting correct information on these topics are very important," shares Nicoletta.

"They must be actions aimed at promoting a transversal culture. For example, on the topic of menopause: we must not only think about informing women but also men," she adds.
