Delivering gender balance across private companies

The FTSE Women Leaders Review is an independent, business-led framework supported by the Government, setting recommendations to improve the representation of women on the Boards and Leadership teams of the FTSE 350 and 50 of the UK’s largest private companies. The FTSE Women Leaders Report shares insight and progress in delivering gender balance across FTSE 350 and 50 of the largest private companies.

Building on a strong legacy thanks to the ground-breaking collaborative work of the Hampton-Alexander and Davies Reviews that came before, the FTSE Women Leaders Review adopts a unique entirely voluntary approach, working with businesses on a significant scale to achieve gender balance.

Valuing the benefits of diverse perspectives

The FTSE Women Leaders Report demonstrates the progress that can be made through working together towards a clear goal. For women’s representation on Boards of FTSE 350 private companies, the goal is 42 per cent, and women’s representation on Boards of the top 50 private companies is 31 per cent.

The goal for women’s representation in Leadership for FTSE 350 private companies is 35 per cent, with women’s representation in Leadership for the top 50 private companies being 36 per cent.

With 42 per cent women on FTSE 350 Boards, many companies are reaping the rewards of diverse perspectives, improved governance and greater innovation. With just two years to go, businesses are urged to double down on their efforts to reach the 40 per cent Women in Leadership target by the end of 2025.

Increasing women's representation in leadership positions

When the FTSE Women Leaders Review started in 2011, 9.5 per cent of FTSE 350 board members were women. Since then, British business has been on a journey to increase women’s representation on Boards and Leadership teams across the FTSE 350 and 50 of the UK’s largest private companies.

“There is no shortage of experienced, capable women, ambitious for themselves and for their organizations across all sectors of business today. Yet the appointment rate remains significantly skewed in favor of men. To make further and faster progress, this needs to change,” says FTSE Women Leaders Chief Executive, Denise Wilson.
