WTW internships are designed to provide maximum insight into WTW's business and the best possible preparation for a future career. WTW interns apply what they've learned at university to real-life intellectual challenges. They gain immediate exposure to client assignments doing work that takes them out of your comfort zone, offering something new and unexpected every day.
WTW Retirement Actuarial Lead Associate, Shirley Fong, shares her journey as an intern at WTW, describing how she has developed through WTW's internship program, and why this was the best career choice for her.
Gaining experience while on internship program
"I work as an Actuarial consultant within the retirement division of WTW. My internship program was the eight-week program within the Retirement division in the UK's Reigate office. I chose to do an internship with WTW because I wanted to gain exposure and experience within the actuarial field, and the internship program provided such an opportunity," explains Shirley.
Shirley describes that while on the internship program, there was a wide variety of opportunities for development, both professionally and personally, such as by speaking to colleagues at different levels about their knowledge and experience at and outside the workplace. This she feels has definitely helped her to enhance her softer skills.
A safe space to learn and build knowledge
Many of WTW's interns go on to join the company in graduate roles. So, WTW invests a lot of time and energy into ensuring its internships provide as much insight as possible into a WTW career.
This means providing opportunities to contribute to client projects and experience first-hand what WTW does and how the company does it. It also means helping interns develop key skills, such as presenting and project management.
Shirley explains that her best experience as an intern was the support from her colleagues.
"My colleagues have always acknowledged my work and provided me with a safe space to learn and build technical knowledge," attests Shirley.
