Delivering an engaging talk about women in computing and engineering
April Young, Business Operations Manager at Capgemini UK, hosted an inspirational talk at about women in computing and engineering. April is an expert in Digital Transformation and Innovation and works with her clients to deliver innovative solutions which exploit data utilising bleeding edge data analytics tools.
Taking part in fun computing and engineering challenges
Over 100 Year 8 school girls from local schools went to Birmingham City University to take part in its Women in Computing and Engineering Day. Pupils got involved in fun computing and engineering challenges that provided a taster of the STEM courses on offer at the University ahead of International Women in Engineering Day.
For the computing activity, pupils used new technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality, hand trackers and eye trackers to make an application concept. Pupils then created a poster, which highlighted the key aspects of their concept.
The engineering challenge took a humanitarian angle where the pupils building storm-proof houses for people living in Sri Lanka. As well as designing and creating the structure, the exercise also involved budget management and poster-making.
