Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month recognizes the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States.

To mark AAPI Heritage Month, AECOM held discussions featuring AAPI team members who shared insights on current events, spoke about challenges they have faced, and reinforced the importance of exhibiting allyship and creating supportive and inclusive environments.

Valuing and supporting diversity

As part of AECOM’s ongoing equity, diversity and inclusion programs, these discussions for AAPI employees and allies in the U.S. and Canada ddressed key aspects relating to how culture can greatly affect employee experiences, how challenges may be overcome, and why allyship is important.

In particular, AECOM's 'Real Talk' session for employees of Asian descent openly discussed feelings about the increase in anti-Asian hate crimes, and how this can be addressed.

A summary of some of the conversation and key discussion points is available here.

Inspiring others to become more active in cultural moments

Participating in the activity was Associate Vice President on AECOM Cities team, Joy Woo, a Chinese American daughter of immigrants.

Joy is passionate about equity, diversity and inclusion. She participates in various employee resources groups, and serves both on the national SMPS (Society for Marketing Professional Services) EDI Task Force, and on the editorial committee for the SMPS publication, Marketer. Joy Woo is a University of California post-graduate alumni with a degree in Biological Sciences and an MBA.

Joy describes key take away points from AECOM's AAPI Heritage Month events in the hope of inspiring others to become more active in cultural moments. "I am grateful we have opportunities to celebrate our heritage at our company. Join me in celebrating the amazing contributions of the Asian and Pacific Islander community in our industry, our cities and our culture," she said.
