Building systems that collect, manage and convert raw data into a story

"Data Engineers work in a variety of settings to build systems that collect, manage and convert raw data into a story," says Capgemini Data Engineer, Divya Khemlani. "So at the end of the day, we need to make the right decision in the right way and it needs to tell a story to whoever that's receiving the end result."

"Data Engineers are here to turn raw data into gold," explains Capgemini Lead Enterprise Data Architect, Isabelle Tachet. "At the end they want to use it because they know that behind the data they have some value."

Taking data science into the future 

Looking at the most important skills that a Data Engineer must have, Divya highlights the need for communication skills. Meanwhile, Capgemini Senior Solution Architect, Richard Storey, shares the need for inquisitive skills, with Isabelle agreeing. "It's about how curious you are." 

"Data science is very new, it just came in, but we are taking it into the future," shares Divya. "Being a Data Engineer is a starting point, once you're a Data Engineer you open up many areas you can go into - you can be a Data Analyst, a Data Scientist. The starting point of this long tunnel is basically it starts off with a theater Engineers role."

Richard concludes, "I feel data makes the world go round I'm very passionate about my role and my job because it involves data and I think it helps people make better business decisions, not just for themselves but for the greater good of the entire world."
