Moving from international relations to logistics
Alice shares her unexpected career path in logistics at DHL: "I started my career in logistics by chance. I never really planned to work in logistics. I actually studied International Relations and from a very early stage I wanted to live and work abroad. So after spending one year in Germany, I was looking for an opportunity to stay abroad. That's when I came across an internship with DHL Global Forwarding in Abu Dhabi. I literally had to open Google Maps to check exactly where Abu Dhabi was on the map. This was a one year internship and I have to be very honest, I had many limiting beliefs in that one year that prevented me from fully enjoying my time at work."
"But eventually I was offered a full-time role to stay with DHL Global Forwarding in Abu Dhabi and that's how I managed to shift my mindset completely. I became a lot more engaged at work. I was grabbing every opportunity. I had a great time, I had a great group of friends and a social life. I really had the best time there. After four years in Abu Dhabi, I made a career shift and that's when I changed from project management to marketing. I joined the DHL Global Forwarding Middle East Africa Regional team in Dubai, and so here I am ten years later, still in logistics and doing something that I really enjoy in a place that offers a lot of opportunities," adds Alice.
Learning from a multigenerational workplace
Alice also comments on the benefits of working in a multigenerational workplace: "You can learn so much from an environment with multiple generations. One thing I always loved to hear was the stories of colleagues who started their careers in logistics 30 years ago and how different and slow everything was without computers and emails, and how they had to reinvent themselves many times throughout their careers to adapt. I started feeling that's it is already happening to me not too long ago. We were using Skype right now and now we have Teams and things like OneDrive for collaborative work, and ChatGPT and AI. Without noticing, we're constantly adapting to a new way of working. I learn so much from my colleagues from all generations, and for me having a multigenerational workspace is really great because of the exchange we can have in terms of different perspectives and approaches not only in work but also in life."
