Logistics has traditionally been perceived as a male-dominated sector, where the number of women is limited and those who do work in the field find it difficult to progress to leadership roles.

DHL recognises the need for gender diversity and is actively working towards providing opportunities for women to thrive in the field. DHL is committed to challenging stereotypes, promoting inclusivity and creating a level playing field for all so everyone can benefit from diverse perspectives and experiences, and foster an environment of innovation and creativity.

Explore real-life career stories of women in leadership roles at DHL.

These stories showcase the achievements and challenges faced by women in logistics and highlight the opportunities available for career advancement.

DHL Finance Graduate Esther Abulatan speaks to General Manager Rachel Searson about gender diversity and inclusion within the logistics industry, and the work DHL is doing to bridge that gap.

Developing in her DHL career

Rachel launched her DHL career in 2010 with the business packing on a line in DHL's Co-pack facility in Doncaster, UK. After that, Rachel moved into Quality, then Customer Services, and subsequently Operations where she is now a General Manager.

"One thing that makes me proud to work for DHL is the way they invest in their people. There are tools to do the job, but there are also tools to develop yourself. We empower the people in leadership to really lead by example and support development feedback. That really has been the key thing for me," says Rachel.

Helping DHL employees develop

One of Rachel's significant successes at DHL is seeing the people she has helped develop and mentor progress.

"I could have helped with a startup, or I could have implemented a really brilliant tool. But it's always that bit, what makes me go home thinking I absolutely love my job working with people, developing them, and seeing them progress in the business," says Rachel.

Experiencing an industry change

Rachel compares the past challenges faced by women in logistics to how the industry has changed for the better.

"In the early days there was a bit more stereotyping of females who were usually in admin roles. I'd often get asked to complete the notes, or I'd often get asked to make the cups of tea. Over the years, especially with our DEIB agenda, we can see that that's changed. I think it has been pushed from our DHL standards. So when we're recruiting, we interview based on leadership questions and attributes that match DHL's values."

Sharing advice for women in logistics

Finally, Rachel shares her advice for women looking to join the logistics industry and work for DHL.

"You will be able to bring your uniqueness and make a difference to a team, to the business, and to the people you're working with," adds Rachel.
