Meet DHL Global Forwarding's Karishma Bhowan, who is a DHL Legal Advisor for the Middle East and Southern Africa. Here she shares what it is like to embark on a career with DHL.

Stepping out of her comfort zone

Karishma explains that a few years ago she met the CEO of DHL Global Forwarding for Middle East & Africa, Amadou Diallo.They had a conversation that enabled Karishma to elaborate on how she was quite interested in leaving her home country of South Africa and spreading her professional wings.

"He asked me 'what's stopping you', and I started with a whole list of excuses, and Amad simply said 'you're making excuses'," reflects Karishma.

"We're often so afraid of change, but it's not the change around us, it's a change within us. We're often so afraid to accept the changes that a new environment may bring, or the changes that a new role may bring. Once you accept that and once you get out of that comfort zone, you're part of that team, you become part of a culture where change happens every day, and you accept it and move on," says Karishma.

Accepted and appreciated by DHL

For Karishma, no matter where you go or who you meet, people become family.

"It's not like going to work every day, it's lots of laughs, lots of fun, it's a great environment. When I joined the company nine years ago, I joined at a very low time in my life, but I also joined not knowing what diversity and inclusion means," Karishma explains.

Karishma believes that when joining DHL, each individual is accepted for who they are as a human being: "You're accepted for the expertise that you bring to the business, you are appreciated for that expertise."

Working in a fun and social atmosphere

Karishma knows that the serious nature of the legal profession, so she says it is crucial to bring the human elements into work in order to have some fun in the office.

"There's always a joke. There's always humor. Calls are always fun. And when we do meet each other, it's like we saw each other yesterday. We know what's going on in each other's lives. We know everybody's secrets. It's fun to be together in a good social atmosphere," attests Karishma.
