In the beginning of 2024, the United Nations Secretary-General called for unity in standing up against the discrimination and hatred that are poisoning relations between countries and communities.
"At AECOM, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (ED&I) is a core part of who we are. Over the past years, we have been working to actively promote and celebrate ED&I within our team, a part of our Sustainable Legacies strategy and commitment to ESG. To celebrate ED&I across the globe, we observe a special time every June to foster an inclusive and diverse environment that aligns with the UN's call to stand up against discrimination," said the company.
Building a culture of belonging and inclusion at work – Asia ED&I Week 2024
Asia ED&I Week 2024 provided an opportunity for celebrating diversity across AECOM's 7,000-employee Asia Region team, fostering an inclusive culture where everyone can contribute and benefit.
At AECOM's Hong Kong office, colleagues held a range of activities dedicated to fostering an environment where everyone can thrive and make AECOM a better team for its clients, communities, and each other.
AECOM hosts Busking, Charity Sales and Donation Drive
AECOM hosted five participating non-government organizations (NGO) and social enterprises (SE), and over 50 colleagues to form different busking teams to drive donations for various charities, transforming the AECOM office into a busking battle stage and bustling marketplace.
The two-day event featured an array of products from the NGOs and SEs, raising not only funds but also awareness of ED&I in the community.
The funds raised from the busking battle have been donated to four charitable organizations, helping the homeless community, children and youth in need, people with hearing impairment, and victims of sexual violence.
"We all had an awesome time and unforgettable moment,” shared Angela Tong, Hong Kong Sub-regional Representative of Asia ED&I Steering Committee, as well as an environmental engineering professional.
“The venue was totally packed with everyone's energy. The busking was a big hit and folks were buying all sorts of goodies. It's great that we get to help out the community while also having a chill hangout in the office through this event.”
AECOM's International Women in Engineering Day panel discussion
With the theme #EnhancedByEngineering, AECOM also celebrated International Women in Engineering Day with a panel discussion highlighting the remarkable contributions of female engineering professionals from diverse organizations including government, institute, and consulting firms. This event hoped to honor achievements and empower future generations of women to continue building a better, more inclusive world.
Shirley Chen, Vice President, Buildings+Places, Hong Kong shared during the panel that “Our integrated services of engineering and design unlock unparalleled value — not just for Hong Kong but for cities worldwide. We take pride in our sustainable work, our significant contribution to society, and our diverse practices that resonate across various cities and regions. ED&I culture empowers us to innovate and enriches our collective wisdom. Creative inspiration always flows in an environment of varied mindsets, cultures and ideas.”
Launch of Asia WoMentoring Circles
Designed by women for women, the WoMentoring program aims to help AECOM colleagues achieve their career aspirations and promote a peer mentoring culture.
As part of the program, participants are connected with colleagues at similar career stages or different walks of life, enabling them to learn from each other's experiences and challenges.
