Like many young girls, Sandhya dreams about what she wants to be when she grows up. “I want to become a doctor, like my father aspired to become,” she says.
Due to financial constraints though, Sandhya’s father was never able to achieve his dream. Now his dream has shifted: He wants his daughter to achieve what he couldn't — obtain a proper education. In their hometown of Bihar, India, this is not easy, as educating girls is simply not a priority.
Honeywell Hometown Solutions India Foundation: lending a hand
Thanks to Honeywell Hometown Solutions India Foundation (HHSIF), Sandhya will get the education she and her family have dreamed about. Sandhya is just one of many young students who will benefit from the newly opened Honeywell Center for Advancing Girls in Science.
Honeywell has partnered with the Avasara Leadership Institute, a non-profit organization that provides science educational opportunities for India's brightest girls in middle and high school to focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Launched at an event featuring numerous journalists and Honeywell officials, the new school features state-of-the-art classrooms, hands-on laboratories, and dormitories. In addition to 500 Avasara students, the school will empower 12,000 students from government and low-budget schools by hosting Young Scientist STEM camps.
With a strong foundation of education and support from the community, becoming a doctor doesn’t need to be just a dream for Sandhya – it can be her future.
