International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) celebrates the importance women have in the engineering field - and Prime Employer for Women AECOM certainly employs many inspiring women engineers

Transportation Civil Engineer, Diana Cabrera, PE, took part in Engineers Without Borders USA, an organization that helps build a better world through engineering projects that empower communities to meet their basic human needs. Highly skilled professional engineering volunteers work with communities to find appropriate solutions for their infrastructure needs.

Using technical and professional skills

"Engineers Without Borders USA allowed me to use the technical and professional skills I acquired in AECOM to help the community of Culli Culli Alto, Bolivia," commented Diana.

"A team of nine engineers from the EWB-NTX chapter and Bolivia EIA chapter and myself, along with the community members, constructed the first phase of a water distribution system for Culli Culli Alto on May 26-June 2, 2023. We installed approximately 1.5 miles of HDPE pipe, two tap stands in two popular spots of the community, and some personal/home tap stands."

In the project, Diana got to experience the current situation of several communities that lack water and to better understand their struggle to obtain water and maintain it.

"A lesson learned was how to teach this community to maintain the system and keep it functional for current and future generations. This experience really ties to my interest in sustainability and AECOM’s Sustainable Legacies," said Diana.
